The "Fingerpoke of Doom" refers to an infamous incident that took place on WCW Nitro one week after Starrcade 1998. On January 4th 1999, Hulk Hogan challenged nWo Wolfpac leader Kevin Nash to a WCW Championship match. When the bell rung, Hogan poked Nash with his finger, Nash took a bump, and Hulk Hogan captured the World Heavyweight Championship.
The Finger Poke of Doom has become the stuff of legend over the years. The story truly begins back in the Georgia Dome back on the 7.6.1998 episode of Nitro. At this event, Bill Goldberg defeated Hulk Hogan in what was a historic night in WCW history. At the end of 1998, Kevin Nash was able to end Goldberg's winning streak at Starrcade 98, a booking decision that still raises questions among wrestling fans. When Nash "lay down" for the Hulkster on Nitro after the Fingerpoke of Doom, those same questions surrounding Starrcade became more prominent. This video looks at the entire WCW Fingerpoke of Doom incident between Kevin Nash and Hulk Hogan, we try to understand why it happened, and we also look at some of the misconceptions regarding it's effects on WCW's ratings.

You can book the angle correctly. Instead of a finger poke of doom work the Nash angle. Have Hall try and help Nash against Hogan. Nash gets mad and Hall turns on him. Hogan Rolls Nash up for the 123. Nash is furriois. He teams with Goldberg to take on Hall amd Hogan. You run this until the next PPV at the next PPV you do like a tag match of Hogan and Hall v. Nash and Goldberg. This is when you do the swerve and Goldberg get turned on by Nash and beat down by the entire NWO. Nash says he lost the title on purpose and laughs at Goldberg for being such a mark.

That Eric Bischoff quote at the end really sounded like this: "People don't know what they're talking about. They talk like they know what happened. There was no turning point when the finger poke of doom happened. So, anyway, the turning point was when the finger poke of doom happened." It may have just coincided with it, but that *is* _when_ it happened.

God. So much idiocy in one night. I remember watching it live with a friend. I'd been taping Nitro and watching RAW live, but after Starcade and all the other stuff going on we expected a big finish and so chose to watch most of Nitro live. After the Raw results reveal but especially after the fingerpoke, I was done with this company for good. As someone else said, the next full episode of Nitro I watched after this was the very last one that ever aired.

The smarter move for WCW would've been to have them vanish but then bring them back out of no where with just Hogan, Hall, and Nash. Of course this would never be the case as Nash and Hogan had creative control that of course was the biggest mistake in WCW

It was as if Eric Bischoff built the number 1 wrestling company on the planet, and then decided he didn't care anymore. He seemed content to have old has-beens run the company and keep themselves on top of the card. That's the difference between having one great idea and having an overall vision for a company. Eric and Russo didn't seem to have any of that, and Vince McMahon did.

I don't think that WCW would've ever put WWF out of business. Yeah they won the ratings war but that was because of NWO and Goldberg. I always thought WCW was stupid. I was a WWF fan. The story lines were always better on WWF. You can tell now looking back that WCW was being ran by Hogan, Nash, and Hall. In my opinion they were the reason WCW failed. Yeah they can draw money, though they are some arrogant assholes. I can understand why Stone Cold Steve Austin never wanted to work with them.

I feel what's also worth mentioning is the fact that this whole thing happened a year after terrible fumbling of Sting winning the title at Starcade with Bret Hart and the failed fast count. Not only was that the easiest possible match to book but they had WWF/E dead to rights that night had they nailed it. Instead of a moment that should have been triumphant and historical, it was botched, confusing and ultimately undone not long afterwards. I know Sting wasn't in the best of health at the time as well as dealing with addiction issues, but they could have have still booked it differently. In the end Hogan refused to do the deal and it hurt them. The truth is Goldberg was a great backup plan since his star was clearly on the rise during that Starcade but it hadn't taken off just yet. Now there's legit argument that Goldberg should have won the title at Starcade vs just trying to keep the ratings war going on Nitro, but never the less his winning the title, while premature, was still a huge moment. So imagine just after a year of politics and BS ruining what was supposed to THE moment of WCW's modern era, we have politics and BS undoing what was supposed to be another major event in Nash ending Goldberg's streak as well as just being a ploy to get Hogan the title back again. Two giant fumbles just on year apart really did hurt them badly.

Thank you for the note about the NITRO book. I've been curious as to what may be worth reading, from a purely historical perspective about the business at that time, and now I have my answer. Any love for those Titan Trilogy books or any other publications on the history of WWF? Anyone? I didn't even watch wrestling during the 80s & 90s, I just want to know the history. Backstage politics, entertainment industry takeovers and TV ratings battles plus stories of raging egos bolstered by steroids and lots of money erupting in violent behavior - pro wrestling is the only history that rivals rock n' roll for pure schadenfreude mixed with unparalleled lessons in cutthroat business maneuvering.

The mega powers broke up and so they needed to collide! this is how you build a story and interest, and have a blow off. WWE also did this with Evolution: Triple H vs Batista. WCW were building a good story here and they just screwed it up like only WCW could.
