Continuing the Wrestling Bios complete coverage of Hulk Hogan's illustrious and storied wrestling career, this video takes a look at Hulk Hogan's journey towards WrestleMania VII and his match with Sgt. Slaughter.
The WWF had seen success with it's series of WrestleMania events during the mid 80s. As the company went into the 90s, Vince McMahon decided to give The Ultimate Warrior a chance to led the pack, becoming the WWF champion at WrestleMania VI. Hulk Hogan, meanwhile, would feud with Earthquake and Dino Bravo. As 1990 came to a close, another wrestler who just turned heel was grabbing a ton of media attention, and that wrestler was Sgt. Slaughter. With General Adnan by his side, Slaughter would win the WWF championship at the 1991Royal Rumble, setting up a WrestleMania match that would see Hulk Hogan challenge Slaughter in the main event.
Along with the WrestleMania 7 match, this video looks at Hogan's work through 1990 and Sgt. Slaughter's heel turn. Topics include:
00:00 - The Hogan vs Earthquake feud begins
05:02 - The Sgt. Slaughter heel turn
08:04 - Initial plans for WrestleMania VII
11:23 - The Hogan vs Slaughter feud begins in 1991
14:55 - Hulk Hogan vs Sgt. Slaughter at WrestleMania VII

Since you put the idea out there that it might have made sense to have the Warrior stay champion and face Savage in the main event instead, I´ll share some thoughts. I think it might have been a little hard to sell a Warrior vs Savage main event with Warrior as champion, since Hogan had beaten Savage at WM 5 and countless times thereafter, Savage had been in a lousy mixed tag match at WM 6 and although he did defeat Dusty Rhodes at Summerslam, it was somehow underwhelming. On keeping the Warrior as champion, that´s a different matter. Some people have said he didn´t draw here in the comments already and some have said it was not his fault, but because of how he was booked. I definitely think they booked Warrior like Hogan was still the main star, so it´s hard to tell how he would have done if he´d actually been booked like the top act. Giving him Rude again to face at SS, where Hogan had a much better storyline there with a more sellable opponent at the time, was one thing. Booking him in a feud as the third wheel in LOD vs Demolition is not exactly how the top star of the company should be booked. Having him and Hogan co-win the Survivor Series didn´t help him either. There would have been better ways of making him more important up to WM 7, whether he´d have lost the title there or not. The most obvious would have been to give him the Earthquake feud after WM 6. They could also have had Mr.Perfect win the Rumble, like he was originally supposed to, beat Beefcake at WM 6 and become an interesting opponent for the Warrior. Then if Hogan would have had to get the title back at WM 7, he could have beaten Warrior in a rematch or beaten Perfect or Quake, who´d have beaten Warrior first.

Savage was the Wrestlamania Savior four times in terms of matches. Hogan could draw a crowd but Savage could Wrestle. Backstage politics aside Hogan helped put WWF wrestling on the map but Savage was also a contributor. I Never noticed how good his matches were until I was older. Savage at WM 4 Savage vs Steamboat WM3 Savage vs Warrior WM7 Savage vs Flair WM8

  33. Bobbywoodhogan
    5 muaj më parë

I disagree, Warrior wasn’t the man because outside of squashing opponents people realised there wasn’t anything interesting about him. Then you have to look at how he was rubbing people the wrong way backstage. As for Sgt Slaughter, yeah that’s as probably a seriously insensitive move by McMahon but look at what he’s done over the years it’s no surprise. The match between the Hogan & Slaughter was decent imo, I seem to remember they had a match at UK Rampage that was better.

This match contains the most obvious blading ever in a kayfabe era. Hogan takes the gig from the ring apron as Slaughter goes to hit hogan with the chair. Hogan rolls over after the hit blading himself. There is a pin attempt and Hebner can be seen picking up the gig and pocketing it, all right in front of a close up camera.

Great video. My only critique is the post-Wrestlemania VII portion. I wanted to hear about the Hogan-Slaughter Boot Camp matches, SNME 29, Warrior-Slaughter rematches, and how the Undertaker was elevated to the main event at this time. Slaughter turning face and Ric Flair’s arrival should have been the conclusion.

I remember that WWF kept pushing Hulk over Warrior which diminished Warrior’s only championship run. I cheered when Earthquake squashed Hogan since it would give Warrior a monster heel to defeat but it didn’t happened. I think Vince had buyers remorse and wanted to go back to the status quo.

  61. maturanita
    6 muaj më parë

I’ve always thought that it was a huge detriment on the Warrior’s run to have Hogan around. They should have let him be the WWF’s harbinger for an entire year and then evaluate if he was drawing or not, but by keeping Hogan around, the ultimate politician, his run was doomed from the get go. Yes, Hogan dropped the belt to him, but he didn’t step out of the spotlight and that ultimately hampered the Warrior’s run as champion.

Warrior's run fell flat because he had no giant to slay. Hogan positioned himself in a program with Earthquake which was a very smart move for him. I wonder what Warrior's run might have been had he been given the high profile feud with Earthquake.

  62. alp21188
    6 muaj më parë

I heard when Vince decided the belt needed to come off the warrior he had originally planned to have the macho man defeat him for it, unfortunately hogan didn’t want the belt on savage and pulled some political strings. Savage probably would have gotten the belt from warrior had he not been injured late 1990 before hogan could pull his strings. But I just heard that several times in passing. Idk how true it is nor do I have any proper footing into any actual evidence for this occurring

First of all a very well put together video. As kid growing up at this time I loved this stuff. I actually own this event on DVD and have since watched it back twice. The match was a good solid match, the crowed were really into it and Hulk was still so over. Maybe the Sarge didn't bring what Macho Man or Warrior could but I'm telling he was bouncing all over the place, he worked hard and all thing's considered did very well. I don't know why people don't like this one. Id give it 3 out of 5 stars. It was solid. There would be alot worse main events in the Wrestlemania's to come believe me.

Speaking of the Los Angeles Sports Arena, the home of the worst NBA franchise of all time, Los Angeles Clippers, it's no surprise that that team was as stunk as Warrior's wrestling career. It's kind of sad that Sgt. Slaughter was brought back in just for this feud in the WWF and if the gulf war hadn't broken out he probably wouldn't have ever been in that situation. Although if other things had happened and it was something like Hogan and Warrior again and we may never have had the Savage match as I fail to accept tugboat was ever going to main event the show. Although it shows how crazy some people can get over things on TV not being able to separate fact from fiction and having pride for your country is one thing but those weren't real actions and threatening people's safety over it is taking it too far. After the final match of the feud at Summerslam he was just there for his tag team with Jim Duggan until his contract ran out which is a shame.
