When Bret Hart was in the WWF during the mid 90s and when Sting was on the opposing WCW side, many fans wanted to see who would win in a match. Not only did Hart and Sting have the same finishing move, but they were also once considered the very best "good guys" the WWF and WCW had during the 90s. Wrestling fans adored Bret Hart and Sting, and while people discussed dream matches like Undertaker vs Sting and Goldberg vs Steve Ausitn, many fans wanted to know who would win between the Hitman and the Stinger.
The history of WWF can't be discussed without mentioning Bret Hart, and the history of WCW can't be mentioned without Sting. At one point, it felt like both men wouldn't budge from their respective companies. But, the possibility of a Hart vs Sting match became a reality when Bret left the WWF together with other members of the Hart Foundation. Bret showed up in World Championship Wrestling as a babyface, and he helped Sting secure the WCW championship at Starrcade 1997. As 1998 went on though, both Bret and Sting's roles within WCW would drastically change. Sting would join the nWo Wolfpac, and Bret would align himself with nWo Hollywood. When Sting faced Bret at Halloween Havoc 98, Bret was now the heel while Sting remained a babyface. All subsequent meetings between Hart and Sting would see the roles again getting reversed, Sting worked as the "bad guy" while Hart was now portrayed as the "good guy".
This video looks at Bret and Sting's matches in WCW. Topics and matches covered include:
00:00 - WWF vs WCW dream matches
05:13 - The buildup towards Bret and Sting's first match
11:21 - Sting and Bret prepare for their Halloween Havoc match
13:56 - Hart vs Sting at Halloween Havoc 98

I was so excited to see Bret go over and tear up WcW as a kid, still dislike Goldberg as worker to this day for putting him out. I still believe Goldberg is dangerous in the worst way and he is incompetent in the ring, watch William Regal work him for proof.

Bret was always a great wrestler, but Sting was also a great wrestler, was supernaturally strong, fast, explosive and with amazing charisma. He just made Bret look a bit dull in comparison. They would have made a better tag team than rivals I think.

I was at the Monday Nitro in Columbia SC on October 10th 1998. That whole show was so disappointing. Hogan seeing Warrior in the mirror, to the Main Event. Was the only live show I went to. My mom went to all of the old NWA events in the 70's, and that Nitro was the only event we ever went to together, so it was still awesome in that respect. When Sting joined Kevin Nash in the Wolfpac after Nash cost him the title made me lose all interest in WCW. Made no sense for Sting to ever join a group named nWo, despite the color change, especially when the leader was the person that screwed you over from the second he got into the company. Would have made much more sense story wise for Sting to stay independent while picking off both sides vying for his services. Yeah, it sounds like much more of the same stuff, but in 1998 it would have worked a lot better to milk the story that way with a neverending war. Especially in hindsight seeing how WCW and WWF tried to reboot the faction so many times.

I remember, the day it was announced Bret Hart was coming to WCW, all I thought was that he and Sting would have a kickass feud because of the finisher move they both shared. Wasn't quite what was expected, however, much like the rest of Bret Hart's short-lived stint in WCW. :/ I don't remember if it was Bret himself who said it or if it was someone else from that era, but someone once said that "WCW had no idea what to do with Bret Hart". I think that quote sums up the whole situation pretty well. In my opinion, Bret added two things that made his sharpshooter stand out over the years: he executed it lower which made it look more painful and he would often hold it for a long period of time back during those years, which made it look more like torture than a pro wrestling submission move. As a matter of fact, I think the way Bret executed the sharpshooter on Stone Cold Steve Austin during their now famous match is one of the reasons why Austin became a fan favorite, because it looked damn painful and Austin just wouldn't give up. Sting however had the best turnbuckle splash ever. He usually didn't call for it beforehand and yet you could feel when he was about to do it.

I have both wrestlers as my top 5 but sting uses the move first. He also had another finisher. Brett always lacked a 2nd finisher. I may be one of the few but I thi k Stinger was overall better. He was better on mic, had a more exciting moveset, and was also more athletic with a better build. It's super close but my opinion goes to Sting k. I'd have loves to see sti g vs taker and Sting vs hbk

Always liked how it was always a struggle for Bret to lock in the Sharpshooter but when it was time to end the match and really lock it in, he wasted no time and made it look good from start to finish. In the end, legacy wise, the common wrestling fan will call it the Sharpshooter over the SDL. And I don't think it was a coincidence Sting opted to go with Death Drop DDT as his finisher later in his career to make it his own.

If you had to pick one match out of the Bret Hart vs Sting matches that were actually pretty good it was the one on Monday Nitro in the fall of 1999. I want to say September but it might of been October anyways it's the one where Lex Luger hits Bret in the leg with a Sting's Baseball bat and causes Bret to lose. Other than the finish of the match it was on it's way to being really good. The other match they had on Nitro just before Halloween Havoc in 1998 which was kind of like a street fight in the back was also alright and I thought it was actually better than the Halloween Havoc match. The match at Halloween Havoc was very flat. They had about 20 minutes or more to work but nothing really happened in the match. Bret's best matches in WCW in general were the Bret vs Chris Benoit Owen Hart Tribute match, and pretty much every match he had with Benoit. The match he had with DDP for the U.S. title the night after Halloween Havoc where DDP wins the U.S. title was a good match, the match he had with Booker T. On Monday Nitro in March of 1999 where Booker gets the clean pin. That match was done really well. Bret Hart vs Randy Savage at Slamboree 1998 was the best were going to get out of a dream match with them and was actually pretty good but cut short again to a dirty finish. Bret vs Booker T. At Bash At The Beach 1998 was on it's way to be very good but out of nowhere there's a DQ at only about 8 minutes in the match which was such a dumb decision. Check that match out and you'll see that it was going at a really good pace and both guys looked sharp and then the DQ just kills the flow. Bret Hart vs Lex Luger on Monday Nitro in the summer of 1998 I believe it was the debut the Ultimate Warrior as well but anyways it was for the U.S. title and Luger had one of his best matches in general against Bret and puts Bret in the best Torture rack I've seen. Other matches that Bret had in WCW that were descent but not classics were: DDP at World War 3 1998, Booker T. On Monday Nitro in February of 1999 for the U.S. title, Ric Flair at WCW/Souled Out 1998, Goldberg at Starcade 1999, Billy Kidman on Nitro in 1999, Perry Saturn on Nitro in 1999, Bret and Hogan vs Sting and Luger on Nitro in 1998. That was honestly about it. Every other match he had in WCW wasn't done well. He had a match in 1998 on Nitro against Dean Malenko that should of been a classic but it was a short stinker match with another DQ. They even had a huge dream match with Hogan and Bret vs the Ultimate Warrior and Sting but it was such a short match and a cheap ending as usual. So not much to choose from for Bret in WCW. He had an OK match with Fit Finley on a Nitro in 1998 as well but nothing special. It would be interesting to see if they come out with best of Bret Hart WCW matches DVD to see how much they could actually find to put on it.

Back in the day with the old Pro Wrestling Illustrated magazines in the 90's they used to have fantasy matches between WWF vs WCW and I remember on one of the covers they pitted Bret Hart vs Macho Man and Sting vs Shawn Michaels were always the matches they compared styles and personas to. I would agree. I feel like we didn't ever get that big match between Bret and Macho Man and Sting and Shawn's styles were similar and both those matches would compliment their respected styles.

These 2 should of had way better matches than they did. For some reason they just didn't click together. I issue a challenge to Sting! To grow his hair back longer again! Who cares that he's balding, I see appeal in a war torn "general" in Sting with longer gray hair, and if he lets a beard grow out, imagine how cooler he will look, and not so sophisticated with a George Washington Haircut.
