"The Loose Cannon" Brian Pillman was a true breakthrough character and gimmick in professional wrestling. When "Flyin'" Brian Pillman joined The Four Horsemen in WCW, his demeanour and attitude slowly changed into an unhinged loose cannon that Arn Anderson had trouble keeping under control. What we didn't know is that Brian Pillman and Eric Bischoff had been talking behind the scenes about letting this "Loose Cannon" character go to other wrestling organizations; the end goal being the eventual WCW return of Brian Pillman.
Brian Pillman showed up in ECW in February of 1996 while still under contract with WCW. Pillman would make appearances in both companies the following month, the plan here being to keep Brian as a member of the Horsemen while feuding with Shane Douglas in Extreme Championship Wrestling. In the end, Brian wouldn't return to WCW when his ECW run came to an end, instead deciding to sign with the WWF after his car accident.
This video takes a look at Brian Pillman's transformation into the Loose Cannon gimmick, the infamous kayfabe-breaking "I Respect You, Booker Man" incident with Kevin Sullivan, and Brian's short but eventful run in ECW.

Dave Meltzer probably don't admit it today, but if you read his Wrestling Observers at the time, he definitely bought the Pillman thing as a shoot, at least at first. Though, in hindsight, Pillman definitely seemed to be working the long con on Bischoff here.

Flyin' Brian is my most luv variation of Brian Pillman.... Flyin' Brian is awesome due to being a "smiley baby-face" from Ohio, having a more realistic smaller muscular physique, wearing Cincinnati Bengals print ring-gear & being one of the greatest fast high-flying cruiserweights....

When Shane Douglas and the entire ECW crew hit the ring to prevent Pillman from "urinating" in the ring, you can actually hear Shane saying "he's shooting, he's shooting". After that you see Paul E taking him aside probably telling him no it's fine. So much great work (no pun intended) there.

Great vid. There are so many questions about how his WWF career would have turned out. I always wondered how he and Steve Austin would have played out long term or if Pillman would have reached the levels of the Stone Cold character.

Not a Bishoff Fan because he had a Great Situation and didn't plan for the future. He let Hogan work him as did the the warrior and many others. What the didn't do is develop all that talent they had and a lot of that talent ended up with Vince and became household Names.

Brian Pillman was truly on a different level (he seen the future beat everyone to the punch then fate stepped in..... Just sad overall he seems to have had a black cloud over him his entire life even after his death his adopted Daughter Alexis Reed aka Lexi Pillman was killed in a car accident 11 years after Brian’s death! Brian was fearless and changed everything) Once both Brian Pillman & Owen Hart left this world Pro Wrestling lost its heart & soul..... without those two Pro Wrestling is empty and lacking so very much

I remember the hype of Pillman signing with the WWF. The "contract" segment was a 2-parter iirc; first part Pillman was humble for the opportunity and he gets round of appluase from the suits there. Pillman promptly tells the suits to SHUT THE HELL UP and rips into his loose cannon personna.

To me it sounds like Bischoff wanted Pillman to do what Drew McIntyre did which was rebuild yourself and come back a bigger star. But the difference is there’s no bigger game than WWE so no matter how much Drew got over other places the WWE was the only place that mattered. In the 90s there were 3 major companies so if Pillman wasn’t feeling valued at WCW he could leave get more money and get over somewhere else. Plus when Pillman came to WWF It was the biggest company so going back to WCW is like a step backwards.
