WrestleMania VIII hosted one of the WWF / WWE ‘s greatest ever Intercontinental Championship matches in history. Champion Roddy Piper defended the gold against Bret Hart in a match packed with storytelling and drama, and the match has stood the test of time nearly 30 years later.
Bret Hart won the IC title at SummerSlam 1991 in a critically acclaimed match with Mr. Perfect. In January of 1992, Hart dropped the title to The Mountie. While fans were a little baffled by this outcome, plans were already being put in place for Bret to regain the championship at WrestleMania. Roddy Piper won the Intercontinental title just 2 days after The Mountie defeated Hart… if Bret wanted his IC title back, he would have to challenge Piper.
The WWF used Piper and Hart’s alleged family relations in order to tell the story, Piper initially didn’t want to wrestle Bret as he had too much respect for the Hart family. Bret persisted though, and Piper agreed to a match at WrestleMania 8 against the Hitman. Piper vs Hart would turn into a masterclass in in-ring storytelling and psychology, resulting in one of WrestleMania’s greatest ever matches and one of the very best Intercontinental Championship matches in wrestling history.

Do these for every single feud you can think of, and find feuds you dont and learn them!! Your completionist tendencies make these amazing to watch and remember. You leave nothing out.....simply amazing. WWE should take your videos and commentary, insert the full interviews / matches and make a program out of it.....would be killer to have individual feuds done like that.....Amazing work
Rody was so beloved by fans at this point that turning him heel again was imposssible.
So should of been hart v macho at WM 9.
Thank you piper it's nice to hear stories of wrestler being friends working together rather then hating each other
If I had my choice, Steamboat vs. Savage is THE GREATEST IC match in Wrestlemania history. Hands down
This match has one of the best fan reactions ever. There is a guy in a red & white jacket opposite the hard cam. His reaction to Piper being pinned is priceless. Great match too.
Love that u done a vid on this match! 👏👏
One of my all time favorite matches! Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Pipers half black and half white for mr t match If a wrestler done that today 🤬
Piper is obviously best remembered for his charisma and promo chops, this match proved how good a performer he could be in the ring.
This honestly could've main evented WM 8 and no one (other than Hogan) would've complained.
And actually that is the greatest IC title match of all time. Nothing comes close.
That match was pure beauty.
it use to be Shawn vs but.....!!!!! forget it now this is my favourite INTERCONTINENTAL match now
You did a great job with diagraming the match.
Truly great wrestlemania match, this bio is just dynamite
I still can't believe they put Drew Carey in the HOF before Piper
To this day Piper is my all time favorite wrestler. Miss you Hot Rod
Such a memorable and emotional match. They definitely don’t make em like this anymore. One of your best videos. Amazing work as usual!
Piper finally puts over someone after many years in the business. What did it get him nothing waited to long should have done it years ago
Psychology is a major factor in all forms of entertainment. I don't see how anyone could argue that.
You’ve got to be at least 40 to remember this match. What a time it was.
One of the greatest IC title matches and one of the most underrated Wrestlemania matches. This is a classic that will only stand the test of time and never age. Peak storytelling, work rate, emotion, action, and blood during the Hogan era!!!! This is a master class of a match by two of the best of all time.
Very touching! By the late great Rowdy Rowdy Piper! A true veteran and legend of the sport
Two of my favorite wrestlers. They both had great style and look and charisma.
Such an incredible match. As a plus for me, I’ve met Bret and Roddy both, and they’re both awesome people. Roddy in particular was one of the genuinely nicest celebrities I have ever met.
Bret Hart was so overrated. Terrible on the mic and an over inflated ego
Great video!!!
Two legend RIP hot rod
The cousins completing over the IC Championship, True Gold
Piper was the best as PIPER . CAN'T say anything elles
At that point in time, the IC title matches were usually the spotlight of the show. Think of some of the names around it: Warrior, Rude, Perfect, Texas Tornado, Hart, Mountie, Piper, Bulldog, and eventually leading to the HBK/Hall/Rock/Angle era. Lots of epic stories built around these matches.
Top five best matches for me. Happy to see this video.
This Wrestlemania was the first wrestling show I ever watched :)
great video. There's no doubting the athleticism of today's wrestlers but I think matches like this show how important storytelling is and how much it's lacking in the current product.
Good preaching
This is one of my all-time favorites matches in wrestling! The spot where piper lifts the bell, then stops and hears the audience's boos... That moment when he realizes he's becoming a villain and then proceeds to redeem himself... It's simply beautiful!
Eh, name variations change over time. It’s still not far fetched that Bret & Piper could be distant cousins.
I love seeing the fan in the Hot Rod shirt, behind the ring, freak out when Bret gets the pin.
Great video
Still to this day WrestleMania 8 is my favourite WrestleMania alongside WrestleMania 17. Savage/Flair, Hart/Piper, Undertaker/Roberts, return of The Ultimate Warrior, return of The Road Warriors and Bobby Heenan on commentary 😍👌🏾
Jesus Christian Roddy can you get any cooler
ill never forget the first time i watched the wm8 match
families spelled names differently back in the olden days. they could still be distant relatives. historical records are often wrong. but they probably are not related. maybe unsolved mysteries can crack this case wide open. and then Canada could have a commercial about how we not only invented basketball and winnie the pooh, but also discovered bret and roddy are related.
THE BEST commentary of this match I've ever read or heard. Well done!
This was a well done piece. I had thought it was a good match, but then when I get this perspective, i get a sense that it was actually better than i gave it credit for.
Can you do a Video Essay on "The Story Of Ricky Steamboat vs. Ric Flair Trilogy"? PLS... You'll be my Best-friend Forever, if you do.
That pic at 20:45 really shows how much Piper's health had deteriorated by the end of his life. Hart looks to be around 4" taller than him, when in the 1980s, Piper was actually taller than Hart. Piper was a little over 6'0" tall as a young man and only about 5'8 to 5'9" by the end because of all his health issues.
Most of the best IC matches feature Bret.
Another outstanding video!, thanks man. bret and roddy will always be in my top 5 favs
I've never found an answer to this - Why did they have Bret drop the belt to The Mountie for 2 days in the first place? If they wanted to avoid a Face v Face match, they still had it at WM8 anyway.
Was lucky to have been there at the Hoosier Dome for WMVIII. Was in 4th grade. Man that was a long time ago lol.
One of my favourite matches of all time!
Love this video
The best there is. The best there was. And the best there ever will be. No I'm not referring to the Hit Man. I'm talking about this channel when it comes to wrestling.
One of my best matches ever! Pure classic!
One of the greatest matches ever. Absolutely brilliant storytelling and emotion.
It was
I agree Piper /Hart was a great match , but in my opinion the IC Title match between Savage and Steamboat was the best IC title match ever.
Cool to see where you’ve taken the channel. I started watching at about 10k subscribers and even if I miss ALfirst for a week or two, I always end up catching up. This is the type of content that makes me come back for more.
Piper was pretty boring whenever he finally got into the ring. Sure he could talk but everyone around him evolved as the decade went on and he remained exactly the same. When he went face and acted like a real tough guy it didn't work because he was small and unathletic. Not a sliver of muscle on him. None of us cared about Piper after Wrestlemania 1. It was all about Hogan and Andre, then the Warrior and Hogan. Bret worked his way to the top even though he was tiny. Could always count on him to give the same match and promo every time.
Piper was always a class act . He’s the reason Hogan has no hair.
My favorite two wrestlers. My favorite ALfirst wrestling channel. Awesome!
Another home run analysis on an underrated great match. I was big on Bret then and always but I liked Piper at the time too. After the match, I loved them both and now I understand why Great job!
I was just about 9 years ago and that match was best ever and 92 in UK love this matches in 1999 nitro and ppv mayhem. Still give me that pro wrestling is still real. Myself I and pro care but did pro bodybuilding.thank you bret and hot rider pipper
Bret has had a lot of great feuds!
They are cousins in real life
5:55-5:58 there is no debate. anyone with an IQ above a turnbuckle knows the answer
Possibly my favourite match ever
Piper died to early
Just like Wrestlemania 3, the Intercontinental Title match stole the show in Wrestlemania 8.
Bret Hart, my favourite wrestler ever. I preferred his first ring entrance music though, not the 2nd one he had. For me there’s nobody better in the ring. Every match, he would tell a great story and look like he was getting his arse kicked!!
Great match, oddly though one where Bret doesn't administer the Sharpshooter.
Bobby Heenan: "What the hell, use the bell!"
A masterpiece brought to us by two artists of the highest calibre, I watched this match live with my late Mum, great times, love both men so much, thank you to both of you.
Thank you for this one. This was (and still is) one of the greatest matches in WWF history, up there with the likes of Steamboat versus Macho Man. The Hot Rod was inimitable. There will never be a wrestler quite like him. Same can be said for The Hitman. This match is truly legendary, much like the icons involved.
Brett Hart has gotten better over time in his promos, especially when he became a heel.
Two wrestling legends R.I.P Roddy pipper
Who could pull this off today?
One thing you dont see in wrestling anymore is the psychology. This was a great match.
Whenever the Hitman's in the ring, one thing that makes him worthy of the phrase, "the best there is, was and ever will be" is that you can always go back to his matches and can still be connected to it. It always had stories that can make you celebrate with him and feel victory as well, you can even feel sorry for him, lose with him, worry for him, love or even hate his character but you can still say wow, this was a great match! As well as made it look good not only for him but also for the wrestler he's with in the ring. That's what makes the Hitman standout and is still loved by his fans to this day.
Hey WrestlingBios! Thank You 🙏 for this video!!! Let me ask you what’s a better Wrestlemania Intercontinental Match Macho Man vs Ricky Steamboat WM III 1987 OR HOT ROD VS THE HITMAN WM VII 1992???
Bret was apparently good at hiding his intentional blade jobs. Bret said they had to do the same thing during the WM13 match against Austin. Also I’m glad to hear you say Bret was a good promo guy. People say he’s overrated in promos but I actually think he’s underrated. When he talked, people listened.
It was actuality believe it or not my fave W8 match. I saw it over a friend's house when he bought the PPV back then in April, 1992. It was a memorable encounter between 2 future HOF legends. I miss the Hot Rod. RIP Mr. Roderick Toombs......bka. Rowdy Roddy Piper
Just those little details in his matches is what made Bret so special but obviously Piper played a huge part in why this match is as legendary as it is. Masterful
What a great match. Two Legends.
One of my all time favourite wrestlemania matches. The ending was top quality
This channel is brilliant💯 . Keep up the great work👌🏿😁
As a kid I always put more stock into IC title picture. Those matches were better and the characters were much better.
This is a brilliant video and this is now my favourite ALfirst channel. Your efforts are greatly appreciated. This is so good that I hope Bret himself sees it one day.
One of the greatest matchups one of the greatest matches in Wrestlemania history that was one of my favorite matches that matches in Wrestlemania history same thing with Flair vs Savage saying this was underrated Wrestlemania matches those were to honor 8mm Wrestlemania matches in my opinion but that was the first WrestleMania I watched so
One of Piper's best matches ever.
Ive watched this twice. This is my favorite match of all time that I didn’t see with my own eyes. I’ve watched this match dozens of times. Dare I say it’s even better with no audio. Everything in the story is there in the action, acting, and the crowd’s reaction. Love love love this match!
Great video
I remember I was so young when I seen this match and it was something different and I've ever seen before so exciting especially when you see a live what happened to wrestling😭😭
Great review. Great match.
Why is Bret Hart's hair always wet? With all the cash WWF was raking in one would think they would spring for a real pair of Oakley sunglasses for the Hit Man... Colored gels with a string?? come on!
Bret vs Perfect, vs Bulldog and vs Piper are some of the best matches of all time!
Love Piper and Hart getting away with blood when Flair and Savage didn't. Making the WWF great again.
Ahh Bret Hart. A man who loves and respects any wrestler who would put him over. Refuses to job to people he doesn’t like (despite having over 120 wins against them) and then throws his “morals” away and rejoins the company that “murdered” his brother because he wanted the cash.
“Why do it here, when I can have a million people watch me rip your head off?”... That night Hot Rod kicked The Hit Mans @$$ and then put him over! for the intercontinental championship! Great Match Between 2 Legends
