The story of Muhammad Hassan in the WWE is quite peculiar. The gimmick portrayed by Marc Copani in World Wrestling Entertainment was seen as provoking yet smart, a heel character whose main gripe was the social climate in the United States. Along with Shawn Daivari, Muhammad Hassan would become one of the most intriguing characters of the WWE’s “Ruthless Aggression” era that ended up getting canned due to mounting pressure from the UPN Network.
Marc Copani had received his wrestling training from Nick Dinsmore and Danny Davis at OVW. After spending around 2 years working as Mark Magnus, the WWE called Marc up to the big leagues. The character Marc would portray was Muhammad Hassan, a gimmick that many say was “too smart” for casual wrestling fans and a gimmick that garnered a lot of media attention. In the end, due to a Smackdown segment with The Undertaker, the WWE maybe went too far and the company was forced to release Muhammad Hassan from his WWE contract.

Vince leaves controversial gimmicks on television: “Vince is out of his mind and doesn’t care who he hurts.” Vince takes controversial gimmicks off television: “Vince cracked under the pressure because he has no backbone and only cares about money.” Not every gimmick is going to be a home run and not every great talent is going to get the “career he deserves.” Thats called “LIFE.” Mark got over it, I think we can too.

It's definitely a sad story Hassan was a good wrestler and clearly WWE/Vince thought so due to the push he was getting and the opponents he was put against. I understand that as a publicly traded company as big as WWE you have to pay attention to what outside sources are saying about you, but it's sad when that outside pressure leads to the loss of a clear talent who most likely had a bright future infront of them.

Good on him for doing OK post WWE release. It could have been so easy to spiral downwards emotionally and mentally as no doubt being on the cusp of a potential World Championship run to being released through no fault of his own really would have been a real bitter pill to swallow.

Since the episode was pre-recorded. All the WWE had to do was cut out the attack like they did for the UK airing, and he would still have his job. WWE does something stupid and the talent gets punished for it.

Copani should have gotten an Oscar for his performance in the Hassan role ..... absolutely brilliant in every way, and dude is not even from the culture, nor was he a veteran in the business .... young and inexperienced, but massively talented ..... not a single other pro-wrestler in the world (in any wrestling company) could match his intensity, charisma, and mic-work during his short-lived era as Hassan .... Vince McMahon himself is the only other character who is as genuinely intense and believable (and possibly Bret Hart at times, although he could never garner as much intense passion and heat as Hassan) .... Savage and Warrior were intense and charismatic, but in a cartoonish comic-book character type way ...... Hassan was the real deal, reflecting significance of the real world, which made him far more meaningful and significant, even beyond pro-wrestling .... which ultimately led to ending the character .... and Daivari was the perfect side-kick, playing that role phenomenally as well .... as soon as dude opened his mouth, the whole place lost its mind

this was how good he and davari were: Hassan had extreme heat from the second he walked out, and of course during his promo. but soon as he handed the mic to davari and davari started spitting them bars in a foreign language, it went nuclear. and it was so entertaining and hilarious. not to mention they stayed interrupting ppl lol. just awesome booking, and hassan and davari made it pay dividends by being awesome on the mic and in the ring. had he gotten the chance to be the champion, any champion, but esp the world title, that would have had long term legs. Hassan could have held the title easily until mania or rumble.

You know say what you want about Muhammid Hassan. This man was one of the best wrestlers in WWE history. Was he controversial? Absolutely. But, this man was a very talented man. That last segment he did though that led to his release from WWE, that was a little too much. But, he was just one of the best wrestlers in WWE history. I will discuss his WWE career a little bit. Hassan made his WWE debut on the December 13, 2004 episode of Raw as a heel in a segment with Mick Foley. Prior to his main roster debut, Hassan wrestled in WWE'S developmental territory, Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) from 2002 until 2004 where he won the OVW Heavyweight Championship. Shortly after debuting, Hassan would engage in a feud with Raw announcers, WWE Hall of Famers Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler. At Wrestlemania 21, Hassan along with Davari were involved in a angle with 2-time WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan. While attacking Eugene, Hogan would come to Eugene's aid and eject both Hassan and Davari from the ring. Hassan and Davari interrupted Shawn Michaels the next night on Raw while HBK was doing a promo. The two then attacked the 2-time WWE Hall of Famer Michaels, leaving the Heartbreak Kid helpless in the ring. This would result in Davari facing Michaels the next week on Raw. Davari defeated Michaels. Angry, Michaels demanded a match against both Hassan and Davari. Raw GM Eric Bischoff refused to give Michaels a handicap match, but instead told Michaels to find a partner. Michaels's partner was none other than Hulk Hogan. Both Hassan and Davari would feud with Michaels and Hogan until they were drafted to Smackdown that June. Hassan then began a brief feud with Undertaker. Hassan faced Undertaker at the Great American Bash. On the July 7, 2005 Smackdown, Davari faced Undertaker. It was on this Smackdown that a controversial segment took place. As it happened, it was three days before the London bombings took place that resulted in 56 deaths, and was the deadliest terrorist incident in the UK since 1988 and England's deadliest terrorist incident since World War II. As part of the segment/match, Hassan began to pray on the ramp, summoning five masked men. Armed with clubs and a piano wire, the five masked men began to beat up and choke out Undertaker. Hassan then put Undertaker in a camel clutch. Afterwards, the five masked men carried Davari away. Three days later, the London bombings took place. After this segment, Hassan refused to appear at The Great American Bash because of how the media and fans treated him. In a segment on the July 14, 2005 Smackdown, Hassan denied that he was a terrorist. Hassan was released from WWE a couple months later. After leaving WWE, Hassan retired from wrestling. However, he would come out of retirement in 2018. While Hassan, whose real name is Marc Julian Copani, played an Arab-American character on WWE television, Hassan is actually of Italian descent in real life. His manager, Shawn Davari, or Davari for short, is of Iranian descent in real life. In 2016, Hassan attempted to sue WWE for wrestlers incurring traumatic head injuries during their tenures and that supposely WWE concealed the risks. The lawsuit was dismissed in 2018. Hassan wrote a graphic novel in 2011 and 2012. His novel won several awards. Hassan has appeared in two WWE video games.

The way WWE used Muhammad Hassan as scapegoat for their own booking is sad. He took a gimmick that would be a curse on anyone else and he did a great job. His first promos were on point and things were fine until WWE decided to go full-on terrorist with the Hassan character. bare in mind this is the same company exploited the Iraq War in the 1990s even moths after the war was over.

Yep. In fact, they only turned Sarge heel for 2 reasons: 1. To punish him for being successful outside WWE with _G.I. Joe_ out of pure pettiness AND 2. Hulk Hogan likely complained about 2 main-event patriots (all others at the time were still in the mid-card or largely beneath the shadow of Hulkamania) working a program that bruised his prideful ego, given how he probably felt that Sgt. Slaughter staying face & entering the main event title picture could've/would've cut into his own "Real American" persona's merchandise capabilities, since Sarge has always been accredited with far more legitimacy as an ex marine drill instructor, whereas Hogan's overblown patriotism was forcibly manufactured by both the man himself & the World Wrestling Federation's corporate machine/the so-called "Creative" team.
