When Vince McMahon purchased WCW in 2001, fans began dreaming about the upcoming dream matches that could be put on TV. With Vince McMahon controlling both the WWF and the WCW brand, many fans expected to see matches like Sting vs Undertaker, Goldberg vs Steve Austin, The Rock vs Diamond Dallas Page and so on. Fans quickly realised though that the planned WCW Invasion storyline would not work out as expected, and this came down to contractual agreements. With WCW's biggest superstars still getting paid through AOL Time Warner, many guys like Hulk Hogan and Kevin Nash decided to stay at home and collect a free paycheck.
Vince and the WWF still had the WCW brand in their possesion though, and the McMahon wanted to begin airing a WCW television show along with WCW exclusive pay per views. Viacom, the owner of TNN, didn't like the idea of a WCW show without the biggest stars of the company, and so the deal fell through. Vince was left with a lot of mid-tier WCW talent, and so an Invasion storyline was booked where WCW (and eventually ECW) would try to take over the WWF.
This video continues on from the last Invasion upload, picking up after the WWF Invasion 2001 pay per view and ending with the 2001 Survivor Series and the episode of Monday Night Raw that followed. Topics covered in this video include:
00:00 - The initial plans for the WCW Invasion
03:10 - Steve Austin joins the Alliance
06:51 - The Rock returns / Summerslam 2001
09:43 - Unforgiven and No Mercy 2001
13:53 - Plans are made to end the Alliance stable
15:44 - Ric Flair shows up after the Invasion
- Much More!

As a kid, I did enjoy the Invasion storyline. Looking back at it now, I think the few positives of the storyline isn't the booking for sure, but the emergence of RVD and Booker T in WWE ring, and the entertaining heel antics by Austin.

The Bagwell/Booker matxh was an utter failure because the match was in TACOMA WASHINGTON. The following week they were in...Atlanta Georgia, basically WCW'S HQ. That alone made the storylibe deserve to fail.

The Invasion angle may be the single biggest reason wrestling isn’t the mainstream pop cultural entity it was in the 90’s. Literally millions of people stopped watching wrestling permanently during that period

When the invasion was playing out, I kept giving WWE the benefit of the doubt. Week after week, I thought: Surely, the watered down version of WCW and the alliance angle was all just to set the stage for the BIG stars to come over and wreak havoc... and it never happened. It was a major disappointment, and probably the single biggest missed opportunity to give fans what they wanted.

*Austin as well and he wouldn't have walked out he would of had more talent to work with and better stories* Funny you say that, because Austin was working with the NWO and Ric Flair in 2002. Those were the big stars available had WWE waited a year. So you make no sense

The day WCW and ECW went out of business, was the day that the pro wrestling business died. Sure TNA and ROH came along in 2002. However, TNA never got on the level of WCW or WWE. ROH is just slightly above ECW finally. However, there's no real competition between companies anymore. Sure we got AEW but, AEW will end up like TNA did

Brock Lesnar debuting? and the Smackdown 6 were tearing it up in the ring. But pro wrestling was "alive" in WCW 2000 when u had viagra on pole matches?lol

I truly wish they would give the WCW brand another chance. There is a ton of nostalgia for it. Now with the WWE Network, they could easily do multiple big shows per month between the brands of WWE, NXT, and WCW if each has their distinct identity (NXT sure does). Have RAW be the WWE show and give Smackdown to WCW (WCW Friday Nitro has a nice ring to it).

DDP and Booker T definitely shoud of been the co-leaders of the Alliance. None of this stone cold stuff altough he was pure gold around this time and i did find his character very entertaining but it made the Alliance out to be complete clowns. I am surprised how well they made RVD look overall during this time, you would of thought he was going to main event which he could very of easily he was that over. Also that immunity battle royal makes no sense unless there was a bunch of WWE guysin there and the rule was if a member of the alliance were to win then everyone from that side gains immunity. Still, Test really was made out to be a beast during this angle its also quite surprising.

one major thing i think should have been done differently is that Regal, Tajiri, Jericho, Mick Foley, Benoit, Saturn, Eddie Guerrero, Malinko, Haku, Taka Michinoku, Spike Dudley, Stevie Richards, Big Show, Al Snow, and if he didnt already Jerry Lynn all should have been part of the alliance as they all got their start in either ECW or WCW and they could have booked the Alliance in a way similar to the way The nWo was booked picking up all the former members of the WCW and ECW rosters that were currently in the company and yes this would include Stone Cold under a name change back to Stunning Steve Austin and HHH if he wasnt injured since he too literally got his start in WCW only not changing his name back to Terror Rising but possibly Jean Paul Levesqe. Oh and Farooq under his real name Ron Simmons as he had a historic run as world champion, which would have been his motivation to switch WCW made him a world champion where as WWF wouldnt even allow him a world championship match. *Edited to fix spelling errors.

It didn't make much sense for him to side with the alliance, I think that is should've been Angle straight away who screwed them instead of that mole storyline. Austin randomly turning face the night after Survivor Series with no explanation was awkward at best

I don't think WWE couldn't have done anything to make it work. The Alliance was missing big names like Hogan, Nash, Goldberg, Steiner and Flair. I didn't include Sting and Savage in because there was no chance in hell Vince would want to take back Savage and Sting would never defect to the enemy camp. Austin's defection made absolutely sense because the Alliance were lacking star power. They dropped the ball on DDP's position with the audience by being Sara's stalker. If he had led the Invasion, things would have been different. The only positives that came out of the Invasion storyline was RVD, Austin's jokes and solid matches involving Alliance members like Booker and RVD. Especially RVD. I remember I was in awe when he came and did his signature moves. There was nothing like that in WWE/F back then.

I have said this for nearly 20 years... And you nailed it on the money with this two-parter. Vince McMahon should have waited til later in 2001 when Ric Flair came to the WWF or at the very least wait til Hall, Nash and Hogan came in at No Way Out 2002 to do a proper WCW vs. WWF angle that for many of us had wanted as far back as 1985/86. But, no... Vince did not allow that to come to fruition and as pointed out in part two pissed it away.

I think the Invasion angle also started earlier because Triple H and Chris Benoit both went out with long term injuries at about the same time. I really enjoy your videos and I really enjoyed this one but in both parts, several times you state that Vince should have waited a year or so until WCW guys contracts had expired. Respectfully, I disagree. I think Vince was very smart to do what he did. Success in WWF/WCW is all about getting over and keeping relevant, so by giving people the option to join for less money, guaranteed them TV time to keep relevant. No one at that time knew what the future was going to bring and if I was a WCW guy at that time,I would have thought long and hard about my career with that situation. You rightfully say that "they all came across anyway" and apart from Sting (you were right here also) they all did but how does Vince who has bought the competition know for certain that theyll all come to him. Lets say Vince waited and none of them came across and they all snub WWE, that undermines WWE. Vince couldnt afford to take that risk, I think fans would remember things like that People also read dirt sheets so the fans knew of the buyout. This is another reason why Vince had to act immediately and not let this "sensational news item" go Love your stuff and looking forward to the next one but agreeing to disagree on whether Vince should have waited or not

Enjoyed the video, but 1 of the reasons the invasion angle was pushed forward was because of HHH injury, the original plan that summer was a heel austin vs a face HHH.

It made no sense for Kurt Angle to suddenly be on the alliance side by November when in the summer previously he tried to kill the Alliance leader Shane McMahon at King of the Ring during their street fight. I will say even though the Alliance angle blew chunks, the matches on PPVs, Raw, or Smackdown during this era were quality.

@Meteornome Doesnt matter who they "swapped". Point is, they did that just to make sure the Alliance lost

@Max Meza I'm not a kid son, I'm a grown ass man and I'm probably older then you are. Second they could have easily swapped out Angle with Chris Jericho since you know he actually was in both companies.

As the ECW Reboot taught us, it didn’t matter if Vince would have waited and had all the right players back under contract for WCW. Vince does stuff his own way, not the way the fans want things to be. WCW could have had all the Goldbergs, nWos, and Stings in the world, and he still would have dropped the ball (as he did once those talents actually were in the WWE).
