John Cena became one of the WWE's most popular superstars among younger viewers. Becoming the face of the WWE during a career than spanned over 2 decades, the leader of the Cenation had a run that was filled with championship gold. With this in mind, many old-school fans of wrestling weren't as enamoured with John Cena as the new generation of fans. Whether you liked John Cena or not, his incredible work ethic should be admired by all.
John began his wrestling career in 1999, getting trained in the UPW organization before getting signed to a WWE developmental deal by Jim Ross. Working as "The Protoype", Cena would join a star-studded OVW roster that included guys like Randy Orton, Batista and Brock Lesnar. When it was time for Cena to make his WWE debut, John challenged Kurt Angle while trying to show he had enough "Ruthless Aggression" to make it in the WWE. This video covers Cena's days in UPW, OVW and his early days in the WWE.

The hulk hogan of our generation
I still remember that ending to smackdown where taker shakes cenas hand
Keep up the good work love the videos
I don't know about y'all but a few years ago when John fought Kevin Owens and AJ Styles I was awestruck by the moves he used against them like WWE prevented him from unleashing his full arsenal. While I don't think he could've ever been an extremely talented wrester, he could've been great in the ring if it weren't for that 5 move schtick they made him do every week.
Cena: "Ruthless Aggression!" *R U T H L E S S A G G R E S S I O N*
Once a cena fan, always a cena fan. Would like for him to turn heel tho. Just like the good old days.
90% if the weak www roster needs to see this and understand simply being a douche bag isn’t good enough to be a wwe “superstar”
The music 🔥🔥🔥
What's the song??
Only thing good about John Cena is the things he does for charity beside that he's the worst in wrestling
He was 100% juicing.
I'm 6'4 236 when I met John Cena back in 2006 I was 6'4 220 something and even though i was taller Jonh was still so much bigger than me I mean almost to the point i was intimidated of how big he really was then. Tv does that man no justice and when i met him in a strip club no less i had ambitions of challenging him to rap battle as at the time i was an up an coming local hip hop artist and when i saw how big he was my mind changed lol
John Cena was entertaining. You can't hate that. His promo work was better than a lot of the talent at the time and was the highlight of the program he was on once he started doing freestyles. You would tune in just to hear the freestyle since it was original and usually funny. Wrestling is the entertainment business and John came in the game at a time when it was definitely getting less entertaining. WWE's lack of competition made the business honestly kind of stale.
Hearing all of these accounts just shows you that Cena earned all of the success he got in the business. He had to overcome a lot just to get where he is
Its 2020 and cena still sucks. Cena may have wrestled more than Hogan, Savage, Austin or HBK. but cena will never be the Legend those guys are. Cena has no memorable angles, catchphrases or anything. Cena is just a muscled up vanilla midget
Ruthless aggression is my fav I grew up in it and loved it
The mix of word life and you can't see me at the start of the vid was lit. Would be an awesome theme if he ever turned heel
This whole video was on John Cena but not once during the entire video could I see him.
Soooo you mean that John Cena never joined the Marines?
I didnt liked cena. But im a good observer. Being able to lift edge and the big show. Not being able to find cena guilty for a botch. He was an amazing performer. He deserve what he has.
John Cena was the real why I started to love and watch wrestling, after seeing the meme going nuts I didn't know who he was or even watched WWE but now that I've seen his old matches back in 2006 and 2005 and I love how he's a really likeable man and is basically superman of WWE But also I want to know what do you guys think of John?
John Cena was roided out of his skull, like most of the rest of the WWE. I don't care what the "tests" show... he was juicing big time, and there is no other way around it.
Thanks, I was looking for someone to have said it. There was no way he wasn't on steroids regardless of the tests.
As someone who saw him play at Springfield college, he was amazing.
I just love how fans point out they wanted to see a Cena as a heel and they forget he was a Heel during his thuganomics days. reminds me of Hogan to many fans seeing Hogan as a heel in the NWO was new to them but I knew he had been a heel in his early days in WWWE when Vince Sr was in charge and i knew that because unlike many Wrestling Fans I enjoy looking up the history of a wrestler. so seeing him turn heel and join the NWO was not a suprise to me.
I've been a wrestling fan since 1983 so I guess I'm a old school wrestling fan but I had no problem with Cena and enjoyed his time in WWE. so I'm the Rare old School wrestling fan who had no issues with him as being the number one guy.
Always thought Cena was corny. #TheFaceOfThePGEra
Love your honesty in these vids. He isn't my favourite wrestler, I always hated white rappers. However, I cannot deny his skills and accomplishments.
I got back into wrestling in 2005/2006 and Cena freestyling to diss his opponents was the best thing. After he stopped freestyling and just referred more and more to “The champ is here” and everything became PG it got dull.
This is a brilliant inspiring video. I appreciate how you break everything down from different point of views and still give a fair assessment and feed back.
Yup we need that part 2. Thuganomics John cena he was at his best
classic stuff!
The downfall of the wrestling business began when Brock Lesnar left and John Cena became the guy despite the rejection of a huge part of the fanbase
Basically His Career in WWE is like a 2k story mode (the create a character look vs Angle )
Cena's rise coincided with my waning interest in wrestling. When I look back at it, not in a million years would I have imagined that he would go on to become not only the face of the WWE for many years, but one of the biggest superstars of all time. As you stated at the beginning of the video, he's a very divisive figure amongst fans. While the younger fans loved him, the old guard just never seemed to come around on him. Regardless of whether you're a Cena fan or not, his tenure, work ethic, and WILLINGNESS TO PUT PEOPLE OVER, should command respect from even the most hardcore of old school fans. John Cena, I salute you!
With respect Mr cena was not my kind of wrestler. But over time I started to appreciate his presents in wwe 👋 he worked hard and played hard..... So I respect cena. Fair play to him 😉😁😊
PKA: The Prototype , one could tell he was gonna be somebody.
Anyone that thinks cena wasn’t on steroids is crazy or just stupid
I have 5% credit to Snoop Dogg, Eminem and 50 cent
I really think the ripping people do on Cena's in ring work is pretty unfair. He did the WWE style, and he did it well. When he did have a match that fit doing more ring work and working at a better rate, he could hang tough. Was he Bret Hart? No. But he was a lot better in the ring than Hogan and many many others.
It’s good to see Cena’s getting respect from most fans nowadays. I mean he did make some questionable decisions, like the Nexus’s burial but everything else really makes up for it. His feuds and matches with CM Punk, Edge, Shawn Michaels, AJ Styles, etc. were amazing, he’s great on the mic, the U.S. Open Title challenge was great, and his in-ring skills have gotten much better in recent years. He’s also carried the company longer than anyone else besides maybe the Undertaker and never had an ego problem like Hogan and 90s HBK had. I’m not ashamed of saying he’s my favorite of all time anymore. Don’t care what anyone says. Ironically enough I did hate Roman Reigns. He seemed like a worse version of Cena from 2015 to 2018.
Awesome.. I was wanting to hear about how cena become the next big dog of WWE.i have heard that he was kinda boring but it might be not true
I am not a fan of John Cena the wrestler, but I am a fan of his work ethic and what he has done outside the ring. His work with the Make a Wish foundation is outstanding.
I can already hear the "let´s go Cena/ Cena sucks" chants at his Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
The moment where other wrestlers “endorse him” is a recreated moment, that happened in real life with the undertaker and they reacted it for the camera. Small detail but vital info and also very cool info. 😂😂
W O R D L I F E
Cena is worthy of being respected
Imml
Cena always been juiced up , just because he passed a test it doesn't mean he ain't on them, this just means he's good at masking the tests
If someone told in 2002 that John cena would be wwe next big star I wouldn't believe then
I am so confused I can’t see anything
He started out as a poor man’s Vanilla Ice and ended being a poor man’s hype man
I was against Cena ( I'm one of those old school fans ), but he would be welcomed back, cause the current product is unbelievably boring. If he ever does come back FT, please have him bring the NWO back.
Cenanation is a better Hulkamania than Hulkamania, we just can't see it because the attitude era made it cringey to like wrestling without some form of irony involved.
Cena was my favorite back when he was Doctor of Thuganomics and Chain Gang Soldier. Once he became Super Cena and Cenation I started losing interest. I still have his album with Trademarc though. Those tracks were fire!
I couldn't see him 🤷♂️
My problem with Cena, the problem I still have with the man, is that he has one of if not the most annoying faces in Wrestling. I just find him infinitly irritating to look at, and the 'you can' see me' gesture just makes it worse.
Story of Scott Steiner's WCW Heavyweight Championship reign/Magnificent Seven
Post the freaking music!
i lov cena anytime
Mad dog Mike Bell is a legend in his own right now. RIP
It wasn't my era but that doesn't mean he doesn't deserve the respect he's earned. I can appreciate that he was the next big thing and that he resonated with the younger fans. That's what's important. Creating something for them and for their era. I came from the era of the nWo. Both things can be viewed positively or negatively. I'll never forgive him for that belt, though. Ghastly concoction..
Doctor of thuganomics was my favorite 💯
i wish ur remix has a full song on it
"This is basic thuganomics" -Word life!
Can you do a batista one?
I must have been born in just, the right time(1990) because I can just barely remember sting becoming crow sting and the outsiders coming to wcw. I'm referencing my oldest wrestling memorys(yes I was a wcw kid) do like 95or6ish but stopped watching when they sold wcw and then started watching see again in 2006. I had liked cena and orton, the boogy man,mr.kennedy,Cm punk. Brock lesnar came out around 2003 I think so he falls into that same category for me. I had been watching sense I was 5 so befor the attitude era so they were new to me. And this was the ruthless aggression era so at that point my watching had spanned 3generarions of wrestlers. Wich doesn't seem to be s9meth8ng that spans a decade. Useually an era in wrestling is like 5to7 years. Such a fascinating buisness
Ruthless Agression. Bitch slaps Kurt. Classic
Your 💯 right. I'm from the attitude era
Never really liked him honestly. His heel run in 03 was alright then he turned face later that year and was winning match after match after match Smh. Especially since 2005 he was super Cena. This man was always winning that's why he got booed out the arena at ECWs 2006 ppv. Not hating on the man but c'mon and he sold his soul. Throwing up 👌👌 aka 666. He started doing that like in 08. He usually threw up the devil horns aka 🤙🤙🤘🤘
I respect Cena's message and work but I don't respect him burying others, his attitude toward some on the lower card (i.e. the incident where he got someone fired for using something similar to the AA as their finisher), and his lackluster ring ability. I just found him a boring generic character whose only quality was that he had freakish strength for someone his size. Hard work is one thing but it's something anyone can do. That sadly doesn't get you ahead in the entertainment industry. What matters is putting something on TV that people want to watch. I don't think he was as good at that as what he was pushed to be.
I loved John Cena as a kid, it's gonna be sad for a childhood Cena fan like me when he retires.
A smiling babyface was never gonna get over with the crowd, Rocky Maivia had already proven that before Cena made it to WWE
John Cena: Great Wrestler Great Talker Terrible HLR gimmick Great Thuganomics gimmick
I wonder how much of Cena's push came from the fact Brock left at WM20.
Decade of doom
I can't see it
"Just in case,the name ...rings a bell"😂
I have a love/hate relationship with John Cena. His talent and work ethic are undeniable, yet there's something I can't stand about him I can't quite put my finger on.
If you boo cena doesnt that already make him a heel? Dude has made the wwe much bigger then its ever been
If Cena wins we riot
As much as I hate him as a character and that whole push he got in the early mid 2000,s I think a heal title run is best left to the imaginary booking team of the mind
It's weird to think Stephanie Mcmahon of all people saw brilliance in a guy even her father who made Hulkamania, Stone Cold, and The People's Champion overlooked. Then again JR was really the one who brought him to the dance.
Skipped over Cena's big screen debut in _Ready to Rumble._
I'm confused, the video is just a black screen for 22 minutes???
Good vid
Never forget he spanked Stephanie McMahon's butt on Smackdown
*i remember watching cena in the independent scene not just saying this because I'm from Massachusetts but he has paid his dues before getting to the first dark match he had shout out to him for keeping professional wrestling up float*
Cena was clean? Yeah, right...
That Pritchard part cracked me up.
Compare cena to 2pac as a wrestler... pac says u can't c me cena says it both use horns n bells in their songs with the phrase... he's the best to some and worst to others but you gotta respect him for what he's done
One of the greats hands down
Cena is the type of person I don't care for as a wrestler but absolutely respect as a human being.
Im a big cena fan! Looking forward to the cena series
I was out of wrestling by this time. If I was still into it I'm not sure if I would have been Into Cena or not. I definitely like him as a person.
I wasn't a massive fan of John Cena either but overtime I ended up really respecting him and his work.
I've never liked Cena as a face or product either but you've actually given me a respect for him I never had. It's particularly impressive his incredible amount of matches as you said.
Shawn Michael has 2069 matches.......Nice
John Cena was the smartest man in the ring during his time. He worked the business to perfection.
And then I stopped watching wrestling.
Thank you Bro a lot of us are alone in serious lock downs and your videos breathe a little fire into our days
